Hosted by Fernando & Lux
Fernando is a psychotherapist and Lux is a relationship and child development specialist. Together, they combine their understanding of psychology, child and adolescent development, relationships, embodiment, and psychologically informed learning with professional Latin dance training.
Alongside their professional work, they have performed on international stages and founded Latin Dance Muscat, where they established and cultivated a vibrant Latin dance community. Their shared intention is not simply to teach teenagers how to dance, but to create an environment where young people can naturally develop confidence, communication, self-awareness, friendships, and a stronger sense of belonging while learning to dance.

What Is the Salsa & Bachata Social Dance Immersion for Teens?
More than learning Salsa and Bachata, this six-month immersion is a psychologically informed learning and community experience designed to cultivate confidence, self-expression, communication, social connection, personal growth, and the ability to dance comfortably in social settings.
Created especially for teenagers aged 13 to 18, the programme offers an opportunity to learn partner dancing within a structured, age-appropriate, and supportive environment.
Designed by a psychotherapist and a relationship and child development specialist, the programme combines progressive Latin dance instruction with embodied learning, confidence-building experiences, reflective practices, group conversations, and positive community experiences.
Teenagers will have the opportunity to learn new skills, interact with peers, become more comfortable expressing themselves, and develop greater awareness of how they communicate and connect with others.
Whether your teenager has never danced before, feels shy in social situations, would like to develop greater confidence, or simply wants to enjoy music and movement, they are warmly welcome.
No partner or previous dance experience is required.

A Different Way to Learn
Most dance classes focus primarily on steps and technique. Our intention reaches further.
Every aspect of this immersion has been thoughtfully designed to create a welcoming, age-appropriate, and supportive environment where teenagers develop not only as dancers, but also as confident and socially aware young people.
Through Salsa and Bachata, participants will explore confidence, communication, cooperation, trust, emotional expression, body awareness, personal boundaries, respect, and positive human connection.
Teenagers will learn how to invite someone to dance respectfully, communicate their comfort, listen to others, work with different partners, and participate confidently within a group.
There is no expectation to perform perfectly or compete with others. The emphasis is on learning, participation, encouragement, confidence, and personal progress.
By the end of the six-month immersion, participants will have developed the practical skills to enjoy Salsa and Bachata socially, alongside greater confidence in themselves and their ability to connect with others.
More Than Learning to Dance
Social dance creates opportunities for teenagers to notice how they move, communicate, respond, cooperate, lead, follow, listen, trust, and express themselves.
These experiences can help young people develop skills that are valuable both on and beyond the dance floor.
Each session combines dance instruction with carefully guided experiences that encourage embodied awareness, reflection, interpersonal learning, and personal development.
Participants will learn how to work respectfully with others, manage moments of uncertainty, recover from mistakes, accept feedback, and contribute positively to a group.
This is not group therapy, nor is it simply a traditional dance class. It is a psychologically informed educational experience where social dance becomes a practical pathway to confidence, communication, self-expression, connection, and growth.
What You Can Expect to Develop
Confidence: Become more comfortable participating, trying new experiences, learning from mistakes, and moving beyond familiar limitations.
Social Confidence: Feel increasingly at ease meeting other teenagers, joining group activities, speaking with new people, and dancing with different partners.
Self-Expression: Explore movement as a creative and enjoyable way to express personality, emotion, energy, and individuality.
Communication: Strengthen verbal and non-verbal communication through listening, leading, following, responding, asking questions, and shared movement.
Cooperation: Learn how to work with different partners, adjust to others, contribute to shared experiences, and participate as part of a group.
Healthy Relationships: Explore respect, trust, kindness, responsibility, reciprocity, and mutual awareness in ways that can support healthier friendships and relationships.
Boundaries & Consent: Develop greater awareness of personal space, comfort, choice, and respectful interaction.
Participants will learn that they may communicate when they feel comfortable, ask for adjustments, change partners, or choose not to participate in a particular activity.
Presence: Cultivate the ability to remain attentive and engaged with themselves, their partner, the music, and the present moment.
Body Awareness: Develop greater awareness of posture, breathing, balance, coordination, rhythm, movement, and physical expression.
Body Confidence: Become more comfortable moving, being seen, participating, and appreciating what the body can learn and accomplish.
The emphasis remains on function, expression, confidence, and healthy development rather than appearance.
Emotional Awareness: Develop greater awareness of emotions that may arise while learning, such as excitement, nervousness, frustration, pride, embarrassment, or joy.
Learn how to remain engaged and continue participating even when something initially feels unfamiliar.
Leading & Following: Explore leading and following as complementary communication and cooperation skills.
Participants will learn how to give clear information, listen through movement, respond respectfully, and create a shared dance with another person.
Resilience: Learn how to make mistakes, try again, receive guidance, practise patience, and recognise personal progress over time.
Creativity & Playfulness: Experience movement, rhythm, music, and improvisation as opportunities for creativity, enjoyment, and play.
Inhibitions & Freedom: Gently move beyond self-consciousness and become more comfortable participating, being visible, and expressing themselves.
Community & Belonging: Become part of a welcoming community where friendships and positive social connections can develop through shared learning.

A Supportive Learning Environment
Teenagers learn best when they feel safe enough to participate, make mistakes, ask questions, and express themselves without fear of humiliation.
The immersion is designed to create an environment where participants are encouraged rather than compared.
Mocking, bullying, harassment, discrimination, sexualised behaviour, unwanted physical contact, or disrespectful conduct will not be accepted.
Participants will be expected to:
- Treat one another respectfully
- Honour personal space and boundaries
- Ask before making physical adjustments
- Follow facilitator guidance
- Avoid making comments about another participant’s body

Parents and guardians are encouraged to communicate any relevant learning, social, physical, or accessibility needs before the programme begins.
Social Dance Without Gender Expectations
Leading and following are taught as dance and communication skills rather than fixed gender roles.
Participants may learn to lead, follow, or explore both roles according to the structure of the class, their interests, and their comfort.
This approach helps teenagers develop versatility, empathy, communication, and an understanding of different perspectives within partner dance.
Neither role is presented as more important, powerful, or valuable than the other.
Selected Ignite Latin Dance Peñas & Community Experiences
Teen participants may receive invitations to selected age-appropriate Ignite Latin Dance Peñas, practice gatherings, or community experiences.
Participation in these gatherings will depend on the format, timing, supervision arrangements, and suitability of each event.
These experiences may offer opportunities to:
- Practise dancing in a relaxed environment
- Build confidence through social dancing
- Meet participants from other Ignite programmes
- Develop friendships and a sense of belonging
- Continue learning beyond the weekly sessions
- Experience music and movement within a wider community
- Become more comfortable attending organised social events
