What Is the Salsa & Bachata Social Dance Immersion for LGBTQIA+ Adults?
More than learning Salsa and Bachata, this six-month immersion is a psychologically informed learning and community experience designed to cultivate confidence, authentic self-expression, social connection, personal growth, and the ability to dance comfortably in social settings.
Created especially for LGBTQIA+ adults, the programme offers an opportunity to learn partner dancing within an environment that respects diverse identities, expressions, bodies, relationships, and ways of connecting.
Designed by a psychotherapist and a relationship specialist, the programme combines progressive Latin dance instruction with embodied learning, reflective practices, group sharing, and community experiences.
Traditional partner dance is often taught through fixed assumptions about gender, with men expected to lead and women expected to follow. Within this immersion, leading and following are treated as dance skills rather than gender roles.
Participants may explore leading, following, or both, according to their interest, comfort, and learning goals.
Whether you would like to become more confident in your body, meet like-minded people, expand your community, reconnect with joy, or explore a more authentic way of expressing yourself through movement, you are warmly welcome.
No partner or previous dance experience is required.

A Different Way to Learn
Most dance classes focus primarily on steps and technique. Our intention reaches further.
Every aspect of this immersion has been thoughtfully designed to create an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive environment where participants develop not only as dancers, but also as individuals and relational human beings.
Through Salsa and Bachata, you will explore confidence, communication, trust, emotional expression, body awareness, consent, boundaries, relationships, and authentic human connection.
Partner roles are not assigned according to gender. Leading and following are taught as complementary skills that participants can experience according to their preferences and comfort.
There is no expectation to dress, move, partner, lead, follow, or express yourself according to traditional gender conventions.
By the end of the six-month immersion, you will have developed the practical skills to enjoy Salsa and Bachata socially, alongside greater confidence in yourself, your body, and your ability to connect with others.
More Than Learning to Dance
Social dance creates opportunities to notice how we move, communicate, respond, connect, lead, follow, trust, express ourselves, and share space with another person.
For LGBTQIA+ people, movement and social spaces can sometimes carry additional layers of self-consciousness, visibility, identity, belonging, or concern about how others may respond.
This immersion offers an opportunity to explore dance within a setting where diversity is respected and where participants are encouraged to connect without hiding important parts of themselves.
Each session combines dance instruction with carefully guided experiences that encourage embodied awareness, reflection, interpersonal learning, and personal development.
This is not group therapy, nor is it simply a traditional dance class. It is a psychologically informed educational experience where social dance becomes a practical pathway to confidence, authentic expression, connection, and growth.
What You Can Expect to Develop
Confidence: Become more comfortable expressing yourself, taking initiative, trying new experiences, and moving beyond familiar limitations.
Social Confidence: Feel increasingly at ease meeting new people, joining social gatherings, inviting someone to dance, and dancing with different partners.

Connection: Develop the presence, openness, curiosity, and interpersonal awareness needed to create meaningful human connection.
Communication: Strengthen verbal and non-verbal communication through listening, leading, following, responding, expressing preferences, and shared movement.
Relationships: Explore trust, respect, boundaries, reciprocity, cooperation, and mutual awareness in ways that can enrich friendships, partnerships, and relationships beyond the dance floor.

Develop greater confidence in communicating preferences and respecting the boundaries of others.

Leading & Following: Explore leading and following as relational and dance skills rather than fixed gender roles.
Learn how to give direction, receive information, respond, adapt, and create movement collaboratively.

Inhibitions & Freedom: Gently move beyond self-consciousness and become more comfortable being visible, participating, connecting, and expressing yourself.

Dance Roles Beyond Gender
In many traditional dance settings, leading is associated with men and following with women.
We take a different approach.
Leading and following are complementary communication skills. Neither role is more important, powerful, masculine, feminine, active, or passive than the other.
The leader proposes direction, timing, and movement. The follower listens, responds, interprets, and contributes to the dance. Both partners remain present, attentive, and responsible for the connection they create together.
Participants may choose to:
- Learn primarily to lead
- Learn primarily to follow
- Explore both roles
- Change roles according to the partner or dance
- Develop greater versatility as a social dancer
This approach allows participants to discover the role or combination of roles that feels most enjoyable and authentic to them.
An Affirming Community Experience
The immersion is intended to be a space where participants do not have to explain, minimise, or conceal their identities in order to participate comfortably.
Respectful use of names and pronouns is expected.
Discrimination, harassment, sexual pressure, unwanted physical contact, or disrespectful behaviour will not be accepted within the programme or community gatherings.
Participants are invited to approach one another with curiosity, respect, and care.
No participant is expected to disclose personal information about their identity, relationships, body, experiences, or history unless they genuinely wish to do so.
The intention is to create a community shaped by dignity, inclusion, consent, joy, and shared learning.
Complimentary Monthly Ignite Latin Dance Peña
Participants will receive complimentary invitations to our monthly Ignite Latin Dance Peña, a welcoming community gathering where people come together through music, dance, conversation, and connection.
The Peña offers an opportunity to:
- Practise your dancing in a relaxed environment
- Build confidence through real social dancing
- Meet people from the wider Ignite community
- Connect with LGBTQIA+ participants and allies
- Explore leading and following beyond traditional gender roles
- Develop friendships and a sense of belonging
- Continue learning beyond the weekly sessions
- Become more comfortable attending dance and social gatherings
- Enjoy music, movement, and community together
For many participants, the friendships, confidence, freedom of expression, and sense of belonging developed through these gatherings become as meaningful as learning to dance.
